Lead Teacher and Transition Specialist - TOPS

Monday - Friday, 7am-3pm

PSL Services/STRIVE is hiring for a full-time, year-round Lead Teacher and Transition Specialist in our STRIVE TOPS (Transition Outcomes Program for Students) program. This program combines functional classroom academics with corresponding community-based educational opportunities. The individual who will be selected for this exciting role will be responsible for developing and implementing curriculum to a wide variety of students with intellectual disabilities through a motivating and stimulating learning environment. Start date is August 5th.

TOPS is especially designed for students who are in their 5th or later year of high school until they graduate or turn 22. In collaboration with area school districts, this innovative program supports students to generalize learned skills to new settings as well as acquire additional independent living skills, provide opportunities to increase independence in their community, prepare students to transition to adult services, and engage in other experiences that promote social skills with students from other school districts.

Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree in special education, teaching or related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • A valid 282 Maine Special Education Certification
  • Experience in community-based education preferred.
  • Intermediate computer skills
  • Sufficient oral communication skills to keep people safe in the classroom and community.
  • Vision and hearing must be sufficient to keep students safe in the classroom and community.
  • A valid driver’s license, clean driving record, reliable vehicle, valid inspection sticker, and insurance

Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop/implement/teach curriculum, to include skill building, community experiences and technology use.
  • Foster/develop relationships with community partners, i.e. school departments, banks, grocery stores, Portland Public Library, Career Center, etc.
  • Ensure adherence to program integrity and goals with non-supervised settings
  • Prepare regular progress reports with student input
  • Provide support to staff and implement and evaluate curriculum
  • Attend student IEP and Transition meetings, as available and in coordination with Program Manager
  • Maintain a budget for classroom/program
  • Provide emotional support and identify quality of life issues for participants
